Biography

Joe Cox is a Leeds based drummer and percussionist. Having studied with nationally acclaimed musicians including Jamil Sheriff, Russell van den Berg, Rob Mitchell, and Dave Kane, Joe has extensive experience in various fields of the music industry.

Joe has vast experience working in a classical setting in ensembles ranging from chamber groups to symphony orchestras, performing a large range of classical repertoire, including Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’ suite and Olivier Messiaen’s large-scale ‘Turangalîla-Symphonie’. Joe has performed at prestigious venues including London’s Royal Albert Hall and Southbank Centre as well as the Royal Palace of Madrid, performing with ensembles such as Hebrides Ensemble and the Grand Union Orchestra.

Joe has also worked in numerous theatre productions ranging from opera to musicals. Joe has a well-earned reputation as a reliable and coherent drummer from his work in a variety of productions including West Side Story, Les Misérables and Riverdance.

Having been influenced by artists including Radiohead and Nirvana, Joe has experience performing with various rock and pop outfits both live and in the studio. Having formed in 2010, Joe has been playing with Leeds-based alt-rock band, Circles who have received critical acclaim throughout the region. Following their recent success of performances at Leeds and Reading Festivals, Circles are currently in the studio recording material for future release, and playing sold out venues throughout the North of England.

Studying jazz at Leeds College of Music under the tuition of Dave Walsh and Peter Fairclough, Joe has a range of experience within the idiom. Influenced by renowned drummers including Max Roach, Art Blakey, Paul Motian, Seb Rochford and Jeff “Tain” Watts, Joe is fast becoming a sought after drummer in the Leeds jazz scene. Aside from his studies, Joe is writing and arranging for a new large ensemble project inspired by the music of McCoy Tyner, Clifford Brown and particularly Charles Mingus. Currently performing with Leeds-based saxophonist AJ Nash, Joe can be found performing in Leeds and the surrounding area.
